Orthodontics

Orthodontics is the area of dentistry that specialises in the diagnosis, prevention, interception and treatment of dental and facial irregularities.

“A smile happens in a flash, but its memory can last a lifetime.”

Straight teeth are an important part of an attractive appearance and a beautiful smile but there are other benefits to orthodontics. An attractive smile contributes to self-esteem, self-confidence and a positive self-image. Orthodontic treatment can benefit social and career success, as well as improve a person’s general attitude toward life. Straight teeth contribute to healthy teeth and gums because they collect less plaque and are easier to clean.  In addition, protruding upper teeth are more likely to get injured in an accident. Straight teeth can also improve biting, chewing and speaking.

Your first visit

Your first consultation is really nothing to worry about. The orthodontist will perform a clinical exam, make some notes and discuss when the best time to start possible treatment is.

Types of braces

Most of the orthodontic treatments still require braces at some stage. Braces are the attachments or brackets that are fixed onto your tooth by the orthodontist.

Treatments

The answer is very simple: everyone is different. Nobody’s orthodontic problems are ever the same. Every treatment is designed to address the patient’s problem list and objectives.

Retainers

There are mainly two types or retainers: the clear plastic vacuum formed type and the fixed wire behind the teeth. The fixed wire behind the teeth is reserved for the lower teeth in cases where there was severe rotations and misalignment.
